Donnie Darko- characters

Characters within the movie 'Donnie Darko'

There are different representations of characters within the movie, the characters are easily identifiable through the way in which they are portrayed, their actions and mannerisms. Jake Gyllehaal is the protagonist, this is easy to identify as he along with two other characters are the first characters seen in the movie, this gives viewers an idea about which characters will be seen the most in the movie.

There are six different character types within this sequence;

The Protagonist

It is apparent that Gyllehaal is the main character as he is the first character see in the movie. We as viewers assumed that he would later be portrayed as a good character, as most main characters are.

The Rebel

The 'rebel' character is seen soon after the protagonist,  it is evident that he rebels against authority as he is seen to be taking illegal drugs within the school premises and makes a funny (somewhat rude) face to the protagonist. This character may get in trouble with the police or cause trouble later in the movie.

The Pretty Girl

This character is rather stereotypical (along with the other characters), she is seen to be checking out her 'good looks' in the mirror kept in her locker. This character will probably have an admirer by the end of the film, perhaps her admirer will be the protagonist as that is usually the case.

The Geek

In most movies the 'geeks' always seem to have a book in their hands, working hard and studying away. The girl seen in this sceario is reading a book, with no other characters accompanying her, so she could also be seen as a 'loner' who isn't deemed as 'cool'.

The Young Girls

These characters look quite young, they are seen to be embracing their youth as they look like they have choreographed a dance, and they are then seen to hug each other at then end, which is a young thing to do.

The Teachers

It is evident that the the teachers are different from the students as they are not in uniform.  One of the teachers is holding an attitudinal book, suggesting she emphasises authority and will later in the movie be annoying as she may tell some characters off for their bad behaviour.
