Genre and Convention

What is a teen film?

This is a broad question, with many answers.

A teen film is a movie that stars teenage actors (or adults acting as teenagers), these movies tend to deal with all the stereotypes that come with being a teenager. You could say that the majority of teen movies are generic as the plot of teen movies do not differentiate massively. Teen movies either have a happy tone and atmosphere (magical elements) for example: 'A cinderella story'. Or they are about pain and anguish (realist drama) for example: 'Kidulthood'.

Wikipedias definition of a teen movie
Teen films is a film genre targeted at teenagers and young adults in which the plot is based upon the special interests of teenagers, such as coming of agefirst love, rebellion, conflict with parents, teen angst or alienation. Often these normally serious subject matters are presented in a glossy, stereotyped or trivialized way. Some teen films appeal to young males while others appeal to young females.

Target audience
The target audience for teen movies is usually teenagers themselves, but young and older adults can enjoy and appreciate teen movies too. Some teen movies may be too explicit for young children, e.g. 'Attack the block'. But other teen movies such as 'Cheetah girls' can be viewed and enjoyed by a younger target audience.
